i mean, I live in Canada, where French is an official language, and when I was growing up outside Quebec they didn’t teach us Canadian French, they taught us French French. They taught us our country’s own language as spoken in a different country. So I can totally believe that schools in the US are teaching Spanish Not As Spoken Anywhere Near The US or Anywhere Really
It’s gonna depend on the teacher; oftentimes Spanish teachers here also learned Spanish in school, and speak English as a first language. They have to pass an endorsement test to be able to teach Spanish, but we’re pretty short on Spanish teachers generally, so schools will often ask teachers of other subjects that know a bit of Spanish to get an endorsement (and some teachers get it themselves because it opens up more job opportunities).
They’ll also usually be relying on whatever resources they can find online to help, and that’s gonna make things different and weird as well. States and districts will also have different standards regarding curriculum, so some may require a certain dialect while others are different.
My middle school Spanish teacher told us she was teaching Mexican Spanish, and gave us examples of where it was different from the Spanish spoken in Spain. Other Spanish teachers don’t do that. 🤷♂️ It’s a problem, and granted language endorsements aren’t my area of expertise, but like. This is another thing that would improve if teachers were paid better & supported better in order to counteract the teacher shortage.
Also, if you know Spanish well, you should consider getting involved in your local school/district/state education politics (they often hold meetings open to the public!) to push better curriculum standards.
